Executive Summary

A technical buyer guide to recycled-polyester underwear fabric: compare yarn and knit construction, fit, stretch recovery, care performance and production samples.

“Recycled polyester” identifies a fiber input, not a complete underwear fabric specification. Fabrics with the same stated fiber percentage can behave differently because yarn, knit structure, weight, finishing and garment construction affect stretch, fit and care performance. Compare the actual fabric and garment sample against a written product brief.

Specify the fabric and garment together

  • Composition and yarn: record fiber percentages and the yarn or fabric quality offered for the specific style.
  • Knit and weight: identify the knit construction, target fabric weight and any agreed tolerance.
  • Stretch and recovery: assess the fabric in the garment pattern, including leg openings and the waistband attachment.
  • Finish and color: specify color, print or finish requirements and review the fabric after the agreed care process.
  • Garment details: include lining or gusset materials, seam placement, waistband, size range and fit points that can change the feel of the finished underwear.

Review samples with a repeatable protocol

Request a fabric swatch and a garment sample made to the proposed construction. Record fit, opacity, hand feel, seam and waistband behavior before washing; then apply the care method intended for the finished product and record changes in measurements, color, surface and stretch recovery. Use the same size, garment construction and review conditions when comparing options so the result is useful to your team.

Keep the approved measurement chart, tolerance, sample comments and controlled reference swatch with the fabric specification. If the fabric quality, source, finish or construction changes, ask for a revised sample and review it before approving bulk production. Confirm any testing, inspection criteria, quantity, price and timing for the specific order in writing.

Recycled-content wording and its supporting records need a separate review. See our buyer guide to recycled-content claims for that question. Send your target style and fabric brief through our OEM inquiry form to discuss sampling and specification review.
