Executive Summary

A claim-substantiation checklist for brands selling recycled-content men’s underwear in the US, UK and EU: define scope, retain evidence and review market-specific wording.

A recycled-content statement is a claim about a defined material in a defined product or package. Before using wording such as “made with recycled polyester,” establish exactly which part of the underwear contains the material, what percentage is claimed, and which records support that statement. A recycled fiber input alone does not prove a broader environmental benefit.

Define what the claim covers

Identify whether the statement refers to the whole garment, one component such as the body fabric, or the packaging. Record the fiber name and percentage for the claimed component, and make sure the wording does not imply that unrelated components share the same content. The U.S. FTC’s Green Guides summary says recycled-content claims should be qualified when a product or package is only partly made from recycled material.

Build evidence for the exact material

Ask the supplier for the composition specification and records that connect the recycled input to the material offered for your style. Keep the supplier and material identifiers, applicable transaction or chain-of-custody records, and any certificate provided with its issuer, scope, validity and covered material. A certificate may support a claim only within its stated scope; it is not automatically proof for every fabric, component or finished garment.

Compare the records with the approved bill of materials, sample, purchase specification and final label or product copy. If the material source, blend or component changes, pause the claim review and confirm that the evidence still supports the wording before publishing or printing it.

Review wording for each sales market

For the United States, use the FTC’s recycled-content guidance to check how the claim is qualified and whether it refers to the product or its packaging. For the United Kingdom, review the Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code and its guidance on substantiating clear, accurate environmental claims. For European Union sales, check the European Commission’s green claims information alongside current requirements in each destination. These sources are starting points for a market review, not a legal approval of a particular label or advertisement.

Avoid claims that go beyond the evidence

Do not infer lower emissions, water use, waste or an overall environmental advantage from recycled fiber content alone. Broad terms such as “eco-friendly” need evidence for the specific meaning buyers are likely to take from them. Keep the proposed wording, supporting records and market review together so the claim can be checked against the material actually ordered.
