Seamless Underwear: OEM Development for Men’s Ranges
Seamless underwear is knitted to shape on circular knitting machines, so the garment has few or no side seams. That means fewer seam pressure points and allows zones of different knit density, for example a breathable mesh area or a more supportive pouch zone. It is a different manufacturing route from cut-and-sew with different design limits, so it deserves its own brief.

Who this style suits
- Comfort-first and sport positioning
- Brands that want a no-visible-lines look under fitted clothing
- Simple colour palettes
- Lines that can use a stretch-to-fit size system such as S/M and L/XL
How seamless differs from cut-and-sew
In cut-and-sew, panels are cut from knitted fabric and sewn together. In seamless, the garment is knitted as a tube and shaped by changing stitch structure and yarn tension, then finished at the waist and legs. The design is controlled by the knit program rather than a pattern block.
What you can specify
You specify the yarn composition (commonly nylon or polyester with elastane), the knit structure for each zone, the waistband and leg-edge treatment, the colour approach (usually yarn-dyed or garment-dyed, which limits where multiple colours can be placed) and the size range.
Because seamless garments stretch to fit, many brands use fewer, broader size bands than for cut-and-sew. Define the finished-garment measurements at relaxed and stretched states for each band.
Limits to plan around
Seamless gives less freedom than cut-and-sew for complex fronts, intricate prints and very tight measurement tolerances. Colour options depend on the yarn and dyeing route, and a design change means a change to the knit program.
Confirm early whether your design is knit-feasible. Send a reference garment rather than finished artwork.
Quality checks to ask for
Ask for checks on stretch recovery after repeated stretching, edge curl at the waist and legs, snag and run resistance, and dimensional change after washing. Knit density in each zone should be consistent across the size run. Approve a washed sample, not only a fresh one.
Specification options to choose from
These are the choices to settle in your brief. Measurements and size ranges are market conventions, not fixed rules; supply your own where they differ. Availability, minimums and cost for your selection are confirmed in the quotation.
| Item | Options |
|---|---|
| Yarn | Nylon or polyester with elastane; cotton or modal blends where feasible |
| Knit structure and zones | Plain knit, mesh, rib and zoned structures for support or breathability |
| Waist and leg edge | Knitted-in band, bonded edge or added elastic |
| Sizes | Stretch bands such as S/M and L/XL, or a fuller alpha range where practical |
| Colour | Yarn-dyed or garment-dyed solids; multi-colour designs depend on knit feasibility |
| Branding | Jacquard-knitted logo, heat transfer, tag-free printed label, hangtag |
| Packaging | Single polybag, header card, retail box or multipack |
Fabric directions and what to watch
| Fabric | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon-elastane seamless knit | Smooth everyday and sport seamless | Moisture and odour claims need test evidence; check recovery after washing |
| Polyester-elastane seamless knit | Sport and training seamless | Feel varies by yarn; test a worn sample |
| Cotton or modal blend seamless knit | Soft-touch comfort lines | Fewer structure and colour options; confirm stretch recovery |

What to send for a quotation
- A reference seamless garment you want to match
- Yarn composition direction and handfeel reference
- Zones you want (mesh, support) and where they sit
- Size bands and finished measurements at relaxed and stretched states
- Colours and any multi-colour design, with the understanding that knit feasibility decides
- Branding method and packaging
Mistakes to avoid
- Sending full-colour artwork for a knit that can only carry a few yarn colours.
- Expecting cut-and-sew tolerances from a stretch-to-fit size band.
- Approving a fresh sample without a wash-and-recovery test.
Common buying questions
Is seamless underwear really seam-free?
The body is knitted without side seams, but a gusset or the waist and leg edges may still be joined or finished with a seam. Ask for the construction description in the quotation.
Does seamless have a higher minimum order?
It can, because the knit program and yarn colours are set up per design. The minimum is confirmed against your design and colour choices.
Can I mix colours in one garment?
Within the limits of the knit. Send a reference and the colours you want, and we confirm what is feasible before sampling.
