Men’s Boxer Shorts: Woven and Knit OEM Development
Boxer shorts are the loose silhouette: a roomy leg, an elastic waist and often a button or overlap fly. They are made in woven cotton fabrics such as broadcloth, poplin and flannel, or in knit jersey, and they carry prints and checks that fitted styles cannot. The big decisions are woven versus knit, shrinkage control and how the print is applied.

Who this style suits
- Print-led and seasonal ranges: checks, stripes and novelty prints
- Sleepwear and loungewear crossovers
- Gift sets and boxed packaging
- Brands that prefer a relaxed fit
Woven or knit
Woven boxer shorts use fabrics such as cotton broadcloth or poplin. They hold a crisp shape and take yarn-dyed checks and detailed prints well, but they have little stretch and rely on the elastic waistband and a generous cut. Knit boxer shorts use jersey and feel softer and stretchier but hold less structure.
Choose before sampling. The pattern, the sewing and the shrinkage behaviour differ between the two.
Shrinkage and washing
Woven cotton can shrink noticeably in the wash. Ask whether the fabric is pre-shrunk or tested for dimensional change, state the shrinkage tolerance you accept, and have the sample washed and measured before and after.
Test methods such as ISO 5077 and AATCC TM135 (fabrics) or AATCC TM150 (garments) are common references for dimensional change. Ask your lab which method suits your market and write it into the purchase order.
Fly, waistband and seams
Options include a button fly, an overlap fly with no buttons, and a closed front. Specify the button type and count, any bar-tack reinforcement, and the elastic width. An exposed-elastic waistband gives space for branding; a covered waistband gives a cleaner look. Seam finish — for example French seams on wovens or overlock on knits — affects comfort and durability.
Prints, checks and pattern matching
Yarn-dyed checks and stripes need pattern matching at the side seams and fly. Printed fabrics need print-repeat and shade approval. Supply colour references (Pantone numbers or fabric swatches) and approve a lab dip or strike-off before bulk.
Specification options to choose from
These are the choices to settle in your brief. Measurements and size ranges are market conventions, not fixed rules; supply your own where they differ. Availability, minimums and cost for your selection are confirmed in the quotation.

Fabric directions and what to watch
| Fabric | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton broadcloth or poplin (woven) | Classic checks, stripes and prints | Shrinkage; pattern matching at seams; limited stretch |
| Brushed cotton flannel (woven) | Cooler-season and sleepwear crossovers | Shrinkage and pilling; heavier hand than poplin |
| Cotton or modal jersey (knit) | Soft, stretchy loungewear-style shorts | Less shape retention; wash shrinkage and twisting |

What to send for a quotation
- Woven or knit, and a reference swatch or garment
- Fly type, button details and waistband width
- Finished waist, rise and inseam measurements
- Print file or colour references; request a lab dip or strike-off
- Shrinkage tolerance and the test method you want used
- Size chart; quantity by size and print
- Packaging or gift box format
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing woven fabric without agreeing a shrinkage tolerance.
- Approving a print on screen and not on fabric.
- Forgetting pattern matching on checks at the fly and side seams.
- Leaving button and bar-tack details out of the brief.
Common buying questions
Can you print my own design on boxer shorts?
Send the artwork and your preferred print method. Feasibility for the fabric, a strike-off for your approval and the colour references are agreed before bulk.
Do woven boxer shorts shrink?
Woven cotton can shrink in the wash. State your tolerance, ask for pre-shrunk fabric where needed, and approve a washed-and-measured sample.
Can boxer shorts be packed as gift sets?
Packaging, including gift boxes, is part of the order brief. Send the format and artwork requirements and the quotation will list what is included.
